How large is the building society sector?

There are 53 building societies in the UK, with assets exceeding £395 billion. They employ  over 51,500 full and part-time staff who work across the country in head offices and over 2,000 branches, serving more than 23 million investing members and over 2.9 million borrowers.

Building societies and their subsidiaries currently account for 20% of all outstanding residential mortgages. On the savings side, building societies hold just over 20% of all personal deposits.
