If I have a passbook from a building society that no longer exists, how can I go about tracing the account?

Print page  |   Email
As well as building societies that have converted, a number have merged with others and their accounts now come within the business of that society. This website's Find a Building Society tool searches a database of societies no longer in existance and tells you where their engagements now lie. Once you have found out which organisation the account is now with, you can contact them, either by phone or by visiting one of their branches, and they will be able to help you trace your account. A link to a list of head office addresses of building societies is provided below. Alternatively, you can obtain a copy of the BSA's Lost Savings Scheme leaflet, which tells you what lost accounts are, how they are treated, and how you can go about tracing them. The leaflet can be downloaded from this site or obtained from any building society branch. Please note: Finding an old passbook does not guarantee the account is still open, as sometimes accounts have been closed and money withdrawn using other means of identification.
